Hear the writer\u2019s voice on the page.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Winter Solstice 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By M.A. Dooley<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This blessed day when the light returns,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I stand on the mountain of my home&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grounded at 7:59 AM and look up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The round moon wanes floating over&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saucer clouds docked in the west.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A soft haze hangs between me and my Shire,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Layered hillocks of veiled emerald,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taste wet and lush as if the drought is over.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sun rises behind a filter of grey<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cotton balls connected at fluffy centers like&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fat caterpillars in the sky.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the time rings for a celestial split,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A tear in the cotton,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A thin sliver of blue blinks open&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the sun sears my eyes&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carving the womb of awakening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am the field of green softened by one ray,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am the strong back of the moon,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Light as the wind that whips my tassels<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reverent as a child witnessing a miracle<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I welcome life and light this Solstice sunrise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>M.A. Dooley<\/strong>&nbsp;is an architect and writer from the Santa Cruz Mountains, Sonoma County, and the Sierra Nevadas.
